En dan was daar het moment: afscheid nemen. Vrijdag van onze zakelijke relaties en zondag van onze vrienden en familie.
Aan het einde van de middag kwamen onze eerste gasten binnen en de die-hards zijn gebleven tot en met het laatste uur.
En zoals dat met afscheid gaat, worden er mooie momenten en herinningen gedeeld, maar is ook het onvermijdelijke moment daar om elkaar een knuffel te geven en het beste te wensen. En dat is toch zwaar. Op zo’n avond merk je ook wat je voor elkaar betekend hebt en, hoewel we niet van de wereld verdwijnen, je weet dat het contact zal veranderen.
Bovenal zijn we iedereen dankbaar voor de aanwezigheid, mooie woorden en vooral het plezier dat we hebben gehad.
Maandag stond in het teken van het afhandelen van de laatste zaken. ‘s Avonds hebben we met Björn, Judith en de kinderen sushi gegeten en pakjesavond gevierd.
Dinsdag was het eindelijk zover: het avontuur kon beginnen. We mochten van Judiths ouders de auto lenen zodat we met z’n allen inclusief de koffers naar Schiphol konden rijden. ‘s Ochtends in de file bij Empel, maar uiteindelijk netjes op tijd op de luchthaven.
We werden nog tweemaal op de proef gesteld, want Tom vergat zijn paspoort mee te nemen bij de zelf-checkin en Judith verloor haar parkeerkaartje, maar het is uiteindelijk goedgekomen.
Samen met z’n zessen nog een laatste foto voor het afscheid.
En dan het moment dat je ook je familie los moet laten. Emotioneel, maar vol vertrouwen in elkaar dat ieder het op zijn manier gaat redden. Misschien wordt er nog wel meer ge-appt en gefacetimed dan voorheen 😃
Dankzij de luxe van Privium, waren we binnen 5 minuten door de douane (iris scan) en security. Op naar de lounge voor een bubbel (een bubbel mag namelijk altijd).
Het vliegtuig vertrok netjes op tijd. Ook in het vliegtuig hebben we onszelf de luxe niet ontzegd, want we hadden vooraf een celebration menu besteld. Wat een feest 🥳
We zijn een half uur eerder dan gepland, 2:30pm lokale tijd in Los Angeles, geland. Als Hertz Premium member stond een auto naar keuze klaar in de President Circle. Wat een snobs zijn we toch 😂
Vervolgens door de avondspits van LA opweg naar Fresno.

And then, the moment has arrived: saying goodbye. On Friday we said goodbye to our business relations and on Sunday to our family and friends.
At the end of the afternoon our first guests arrived and the die-hards stayed until the very last moment.
And as usual with saying goodbye, we were able to share some beautiful moments and memories with each other. But finally the unavoidable moment is there where you hug for the last time and wish each other all the best. It was a very heavy and intense event.
During the evening you hear stories of what you meant for one another. And, however we don’t leave the earth, you know the way of contact will definitely change.
Above all, we are thankful to everyone for being there, for their nice words and most of all the pleasure we had that evening.
On Monday we needed to deal with all the final things before leaving. In the evening we ate sushi with Björn (my brother), Judith (his wife) and their kids (Keano and Bo). After that we celebrated “pakjesavond” (that’s a Dutch tradition for Sinterklaas: see here).
On Tuesday the adventure could finally start. We borrowed the car of Judith’s parents so we were able to the get to Schiphol airport with the family and all our suitcases. We got stuck in traffic jams but we nevertheless arrived on time at the airport.
We were put to the test because Tom forgot to took is passport from the self-checkin machine and Judith lost her parking ticket, but luckily in the end it all worked out.

And then there is the inevitable moment that you’ll have to say farewell to your family. Very emotional, but knowing that everybody will make it in their own way. Maybe we’ll text and facetime even more than before 😀
Thanks to luxury of the Privium subscription, it took us only 5 minutes to get through customs (iris scan) and security. And off we went to the lounge for a bottle of bubbly.

The plane departed right on time. Also aboard we didn’t deprive ourselves of too much luxury as we pre-ordered a celebration menu. What a joy 🥳

We arrived in Los Angeles half an hour earlier than expected at 2:30 pm. As Hertz Premium member we were entitled to choose any car in the President Circle. Such a snobs we are 😂.
After that we went through LA during the evening rush hour on our way to Fresno.
